Review of Oaxaca’s Tule, Mitla, Hierve el Agua and mezcal tour, with practical advice on timing, value, food, transport and what to expect.

“This tour was so fun. We had an amazing guide in Ede and she was so knowledgeable and fun. This tour is listed as a whole day tour but trust me, it is not tiring at all. You will be visiting El Tule and Mitla first, then get to do a nice dip in the pools at Hierva. So you get to cool off. Then you will be taken to the most amazing lunch buffet (wishing I had more as I am writing this review lol) and then to a nice local artisanal place and finally, ending the day with the well thought out trip to a mezcal distillery place…”

★★★★★★★★★★5.0 · 413 reviews · 8 hours (approx.) Top rated

Review of Oaxaca’s Hierve el Agua and mezcal tour, with hiking, mineral pools, distillery tasting, transport tips, and honest drawbacks.

“Great tour, with very knowledgeable guides. The hike was easy—we didn’t hire a local guide for that part so walked on our own. The pools looked nice and refreshing, but the weather was a bit too cold for us to fully swim so we just dipped our feet in after the hike. Others in our tour group were braver and went for a dip though. The mezcal tasting was generous—we had 10-14 samples and learned a lot about the distillation process along the way.”

“We aren't huge mezcal drinkers but wanted to see how it was made so we decided to try this tour. Our tour guide Karen made it exceptional. She had an intimate knowledge about the mezcal making process. We started off at a agave farm, then went to the distillery and finished it off with a delicious traditional meal. Everything about the day was special. Thanks again Karen.”

“This is a good tour to get out of the city and see some of the environment. It is a mix of activities which I enjoyed, and we did not stay at any one too long. I found the Mezcal distillery a bit disappointing as it was a big tour bus stop. Fr a small group Viator could find something more authentic. The tour guide was fine, and had a good command of English as well, but ran out of steam after the Mitla stop, and did not have much to say after that. As a tour guide myself, I think he could have provided us with more information about…”

“We tend to avoid bus tours and tourist crowds, but still want to take in the beauty of local sites. That's why were were so happy to come across Carlos's hike. We got to Hierve el Agua early before the tourists and had the place to ourselves to take photos and go for a swim. It was much more enjoyable than having to fight the crowds. We also beat the heat by starting our hike early. Carlos shared some cultural history and pointed out various plants and sites. The most amazing part was reaching the waterfall at La Salina which had no tourists, no locals and was this incredible hidden…”

“What an amazing experience from start to finish. Our tour guide Adriel was so knowledgeable, and very professional. We have learned so much about Oaxaca, the surrounding towns and the Mexican culture. The bread was delicious at the artisan bakery, accompanied by a briefing. We arrived at Hierve el Agua, and it wasn't crowded so we enjoyed the hike, swim, views, and petrified waterfalls. It was absolutely stunning. We finished in the Mezcal factory, and the drink was high quality and delicious. The small group size made such a difference, and great value for money. Keep doing what you do, it was brilliant.”

( I had chille rellenos and my husband had a tlayuda) After that we went to the rug maker and had a great time tasting mezcal. At the end of the day we visited Monte Alban. Our guide was great! We recommend this tour to anyone who comes to Oaxaca. Also if you come during the rainy season be sure to bring an umbrella.”
